Rev. Dr. Joe E. Lockwood’s ministerial journey began in 1996 when he
heard the Lord call him to preach. As a God-fearing man and a man after
God’s own heart, he accepted the challenge that the Lord had given him.
His educational experience has greatly enlightened his spiritual life in
ministry, providing him with the wisdom and knowledge necessary for an
effective ministry. God has equipped him with the essential tools to achieve
maturity and spiritual growth. The scripture that supports his ministerial
journey and is also his favorite is 2 Timothy 2:15, “Study to shew thyself
approved, a workman need not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of
truth.”
Rev. Dr. Lockwood currently serves as an Itinerant Elder in the Seventh
Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. He is
presently the pastor of Felderville AME Church in the Midlands District of
the Central Conference, under the leadership of Presiding Elder Charles E.
Young and Presiding Bishop James Levert Davis.
Before his current position, he served as pastor in various churches within
the Palmetto Conference. He was the pastor at St. Mary AME Church in
the Kingstree District under the leadership of Elder Remus Harper, Jr. and
Bishop Samuel Lawrence Green, Sr. He also served at Greater Mt. Zion
AME Church in the Mt. Pleasant District under the leadership of Elder
Juenarrl Keith and Retired Bishop Richard Franklin Norris. Rev. Dr.
Lockwood began his ministerial journey at Ebenezer Mt. Zion AME Church,
also in the Mt. Pleasant District, under the leadership of Retired Elder
Charles Graves and Retired Bishop Preston Warren Williams II.
Throughout his journey, Rev. Dr. Joe E. Lockwood has demonstrated a
steadfast commitment to his calling, continually seeking to grow in his faith
and serve his congregation with dedication and love.
Rev. Dr. Lockwood received his grade school education at Cainhoy schools
in Berkeley County. He served our country in the United States Army as a
mechanical engineer. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion
from Allen University, Columbia, SC; a Master of Divinity from Payne
Theological Seminary, Wilberforce, Ohio; and a Doctor of Philosophy in
Christian Counseling through Newburgh Theological Seminary and College
of the Bible.
Rev. Dr. Lockwood’s diverse educational background and practical
experience have made him a well-rounded and insightful leader.
Rev. Dr. Lockwood is a family man, married to Sis. Juanita Jean Smith
Lockwood: together they have eight children and seven beautiful
grandchildren. He is an outgoing, sociable person with good
communication skills. Rev. Dr. Lockwood makes people feel at home
through his teaching, preaching, humor, and personal interaction. He is an
authentic person and advises his congregation to keep it real and let God
do a work in their life. His hobbies are fishing, gardening, hunting and of
course playing with his grandchildren.
Sis Juanita Jean Lockwoood is a compassionate and loving woman of God who is always helping people and providing words of encouragement. She loves to see others happy and smiling. Sis. Lockwood is a family-oriented person with a heart of Gold.
Sis. Lockwood is married to Dr. Joe Lockwood, Pastor of Felderville AME Church in Santee, South Carolina. Together, they have been blessed with eight adult children and seven beautiful grandchildren . Their home is in Huger, SC, where they have built a life filled with love, faith, and community service. A native of Awendaw, SC, Sis. Lockwood's roots run deep in her community.
She attended Charleston County Schools, served in the United States Air Force, and furthered her educational journey obtaining a Masters Degree in Human Services from Purdue University Global. Sis. Lockwood is currently employed by the US Department of State. Her educational and professional journey is marked by dedication and excellence, reflecting her commitment to serving others and making a positive impact in every role she undertakes.
In church, Sis. Lockwood diligently serves various capacities within the SC Central Conference to include the Minister's Spouses, Widows and Widowers plus PK's Organization (MSWAWO+PKs) Correspondence Secretary, Midland's District Women's MIssionary Society 2nd Vice President, and Chairperson for the District's College and Career Ministry. She also served the SC Palmetto Conference on various levels within the MSWAWO+PKs, WMS, YPD, DMC, and Christian Education Director.
In addition to her professional and church roles, Sis. Lockwood has made significant contributions to her local community. She served as a Girl Scout Leader, nurturing young girls to become confident and capable leaders. Her role as Secretary for the Headstart Program showcases her commitment to early childhood education, while her work as a Patient Care Assistant and Hospice Volunteer highlights her compassionate nature and dedication to providing comfort and care to those in need. Furthermore, SIs. Lockwood has volunteered for the Awendaw Senior Citizens Center, ensuring that the elderly in her community receive support and attention they deserve. Her membership in WIRE (Women in Rural Electrification) reflects her advocacy for the empowerment and advancement of women in rural areas.
Sis. Lockwood draws strength and inspiration from her favorite scripture, Jeremiah 29:11: "For I know the thoughts that I think of you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil to give you an expectant end." This verse epitomizes her faith and the hopeful outlook she maintains in all aspects of her llife, guiding her action and interactions with others.
